Austin harper western michigan
Western Michigan University men's basketball coach Steve Hawkins had seen enough by the end of last week's Kentucky HoopFest in Louisville, and knew the big boys were lurking.
Hawkins made an offer early this week and Harper, who will be a senior at Grand Haven High School this fall, has agreed to join the Broncos. And, after talking it over with his parents and coaches, made the decision not to play roulette with a high major offer while jeopardizing his scholarship with WMU, which asked him to make a decision before the July recruiting period. Hawkins, who took over as the primary recruiter on Harper when assistant Clayton Bates left, can't comment on unsigned recruits, per NCAA rules.
Harper, an AAU teammate of Simons, has "exploded" on the AAU scene this summer, Storm assistant coach Jim Zuidema said, catching the eyes of coaches previously only fixated on his more heralded friend. Harper is a combo guard but, Zuidema said, will be a true point guard by the time he's done at WMU. He's gone from a do-everything guard at Grand Haven to a point guard for the Storm. He's one of the most athletic kids we've got.
It was a matter of schools and coaches getting to see him play at a higher level. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
In the spirit of rationality, let's take a look at the first several days of the NBA season without overindulging any of the still very limited footage we have at our disposal.
Twelve Characters: Russell Westbrook. Is Russ spitting nonsense when he says he's a Pau Gasol acolyte? Yeah, probably. But a tamed Russ, who is ferocious yet under his own control is an exhilarating concept. Twelve Characters: Zach LaVine.
While that natural athleticism obviously helps him on the court, it has perhaps also made us slow to appreciate the fulsome layers of polish Zach LaVine has applied to his game over the past few seasons. Twelve Characters: John Collins. Maintaining consistency is easier said than done but John Collins has sorted a couple of things: he's sure that Hawks brass has faith in him, and he's properly introduced himself to the rest of us.
