Plants, roots, lichen, tree bark, nuts, crushed insects, mollusks, and iron oxide could be used to create almost any dye.

The cost of some dye sources was higher than the cost of others. If the fabric was not mordanted before dyeing, it tended to fade. Furthermore, because brighter and more strongly colored materials were more expensive, only nobility and the rich wore them.

Bright colors, high-quality textiles, and long jackets all indicated that the wearer was unquestionably noble. Long stockings and tunics were the norm for men. Jackets, breeches, and knee-length pants were also worn by noblemen. Jewelry and animal skins were worn by both noblemen and noblewomen.

Women, on the other hand, wore long gowns with sleeveless tunics and hair covering headdresses. Men and women donned sheepskin capes, woolen gloves, and caps to keep warm in the winter. The structure of undergarments remained unchanged throughout the Middle Ages. It consisted of a linen shirt, long stockings, and, for males, breeches, all of which were washed frequently, as opposed to ordinary attire, which was washed nearly never.

There is no paperwork or records about the type of clothing worn to sleep, but historians believe that it was the same linen shirts that men and women wore under their ordinary garments. During the Middle Ages, hats were used for a variety of purposes.

Wide-brimmed straw hats, tight-fitting linen or hemp caps knotted under the chin like a hood, and a variety of felt caps were among the headgear worn by males. Although some nobility wore ornate headdresses and hairstyles of considerable height and weight, women wore veils and headdresses. Cesare Borgia originally Cesare de Borgia, was an Italian nobleman, politician, and condottiero of Valencian descent who served as captain general of the papal armies between and in the service of his father, Pope Alexander VI.

He was Duke of Valentinois from to , then Duke of Romagna from , after conquering the provinces of Romagna, Urbino, and Camerino. Cesare was born into a clerical family and was named bishop of Pamplona at sixteen, archbishop of Valencia at nineteen, and cardinal a year later.
