Craigslist seattle rant
RAVE to a local bookstore in Tacoma. Even though the computer did not show them having a specific book I was looking for, they offered to Latest Headlines October 25, at am. October 24, at am. Not just flagging but also requiring payment or a phone number to post, thereby removing anonymity.
Some claims are that staff have lowered the flag threshold so fewer flags remove an ad, but how does that help legitimate users? Unfortunately, these categories are only in the Politics and Rants and Raves RnR sections, where most free, anonymous speech happened on the main Craigslist site. No account or personal info needed, just an email address and a keyboard.
Not anymore. As you see from various screenshots over the last month or two, Politics and RnR have been emptied. Not just locally, in Portland or Eugene, but across the entire west coast. And then we see posts like this, which claim internal meddling from Craigslist itself may be to blame:.
But when so many of us, even posting perfectly legitimate and innocuous ads, are still flagged away in hours, and with the mass banning and blocking of so many users on so many platforms now, it starts to not sound so inconceivable. Whether this emptying of sections is sabotage or the action of site administrators, the end result is still the same. The entire Politics sections of major cities sit empty. No Rants or Raves are permitted; even the most loving Rave for a local small business rarely sneaks past the flaggers.
No one can post a message of unity in Politics. No more anonymous free speech, of any kind, is permitted. The Twitter bans and Facebook deletions were bad enough in the last few years, as were the shadowbans across all platforms and websites.
Influencers and algorithm-slaves were already a problem. Despite my abandoning it for buying or selling, I do keep an eye on it. In my opinion the site has done one thing right: no ceaseless obnoxious redesigns every six months.
We always know where everything is and what to expect when we go there, and I for one really appreciate that. Note: Craigslist has not responded to a press inquiry about this subject sent August Layperson, nobody, expert on nothing.
